REMSA Health’s Point of Impact program offers appointment slots for car seat education and installation.  You may bring your child to the appointment, though it is not required.  Please ensure to have your child's (ren) most recent height and weight. Appointments are held at the REMSA Center for Integrated Health and Community Education, 400 Edison Way, Suite B.

Paramedic Program Entrance Testing

 Thank you for considering the REMSA Paramedic Education Program 

 

There are multiple steps to successfully making it into our program.  This is a highly competitive process and each step should be taken seriously.  If you have questions at any time, please do not hesitate to contact us to ensure you are prepared for each step in the process. As of March 1st, 2023 a pharmacology exam is now a part of the application process for the paramedic program (entrance and Pharmacology exam scheduled separately). You must score at least 80% in order to be considered for the program. A score of 70-79% will allow for one retest per cohort. 

Course Information - REMSA Education reserves the right to make changes to the schedule or cancel a class due to low enrollment if needed.

    Step 1: Testing - The REMSA Paramedic program currently uses a written exam (this exam is taken on site at the REMSA Center for Prehospital Education in a proctored testing room) to evaluate the following categories: math (including basic math and algebra), information from the current EMT curriculum, medical terminology, EMT scope medication and dosages, and patient assessment and treatment. Candidates must complete this exam at one of the testing sessions. We do not offer study guides through REMSA, however, we do advise that you study basic math/algebra, and the current EMT curriculum. It is recommended that you review the latest EMT text of your choice. Please allot up to 90 minutes to complete the Entrance Exam. We also use a pharmacology exam (also taken on site at the REMSA Center for Prehospital Education in a proctored testing room). Please see Step 2 for more information about this exam. AEMT training and certification is no longer required. Please bring your State of Nevada EMT/AEMT certification. If you do not have a State of Nevada Certification you will be required to obtain one prior to the first day of class through reciprocity. This step should be handled directly with the State of Nevada EMS Division. Call 775-687-7590 for help with state certification issues.

      Step 2: Download Pharmacology List - You NEED to start studying NOW. You already should have downloaded this but if you have not, we cannot stress enough how important this step is. PLEASE STUDY. The Pharmacology Exam will open 6 months prior to the start of class. You must achieve an 80% to be considered for that paramedic class. If on the first attempt, you are unable to obtain an 80% but get a score between 70-79% you will be allowed one retest for the same entrance process. If you score under 70% on the Pharmacology Exam on any attempt, you will be removed from eligibility for that cohort and will be encouraged to apply for a later class. A retest can only be taken at least two weeks after the first attempt to give you more time to study. The second attempt will be from a different version of the Pharmacology Exam. The retest needs to be completed prior to the Application Deadline in order to remain eligible for the class. Please allot for up to three hours for the Pharmacology Exam. Please allow five business days for the test to be graded. 

      Step 3: Submit Completed Application - Applications are available on the website. The application has many parts including reference letters and a transcript requests.  Please be prepared to put work into this step and do not wait until the last minute to complete.

    Step 4: Panel Interview - All successful candidates will be contacted and scheduled for a board interview. Five to seven board members including REMSA field staff will ask standard interview questions allowing the candidate to share work history and reasons why you are seeking a career as a paramedic. It is imperative that you come prepared to share why you want to be a paramedic, what experience you have that will make you successful in the class, and what drives you personally.

Successful Acceptance into the Program:  REMSA Education Coordinators will score the application, letters of recommendation, exam scores, and panel interview scores. A list of accepted candidates will be compiled and notifications will be made.  

Part of choosing to become a paramedic should also include some research and understanding of what the job entails. It is important to understand the physical and mental challenges of the job and ensuring that you are prepared to meet them prior to spending a substantial amount of time and money on the program. Please review the functional job analysis provided by NHTSA to understand the finer details of the day to day expectations of a paramedic.

Advanced Cardiac Life Support

Description: The ACLS Provider Course provides the knowledge and skills needed to evaluate and manage the first 10 minutes of an adult ventricular fibrillation/ventricular tachycardia (VF/VT) arrest. Providers are expected to learn to manage 10 core ACLS cases: a respiratory emergency, four types of cardiac arrest (simple VF/VT, complex VF/VT, PEA and asystole), four types of prearrest emergencies (bradychardia, stable tachycardia, unstable tachycardia and acute coronary syndromes) and stroke.

Audience: Personnel staffing emergency, intensive care or critical care departments; emergency medical providers such as physicians, nurses, emergency technicians, paramedics, respiratory therapists and other professionals who may respond to a cardiovascular emergency.

Please Bring: Current ACLS Provider Manual and completed mandatory pre-test certificate. Every student must come to class with a current provider manual. BLS CPR for Healthcare Providers


The American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Providers Course covers core material including adult and pediatric CPR (including two-rescuer scenarios and use of the bag mask), foreign-body airway obstruction, and automated external defibrillation.


Intended Audience:
For healthcare providers such as EMS personnel, physician assistants, doctors, dentists, nurses, respiratory therapists and anyone who must have a credential (card) documenting successful completion of a CPR course. Course description provided by American Heart Association®

BLS CPR for Healthcare Providers Recertification

Description: The American Heart Association’s BLS for Healthcare Providers Recertification course reviews core materials such as adult and pediatric CPR (including two-rescuer scenarios and use of the bag-valve-mask), foreign-body airway obstruction, and automated external defibrillation. Participants will be required to complete a combination of hands-on skills practice, skills testing, and written exam to successfully complete this course.

 

Intended Audience: This course is intended for currently certified healthcare providers such as EMS personnel, physician assistants, doctors, dentists, nurses, respiratory therapists, and other allied healthcare professionals who are required to recertify a current AHA BLS certification. YOUR CERTIFICATION MUST BE CURRENT AND NOT EXPIRED, PROOF WILL BE REQUESTED UPON ENTRANCE TO THE CLASS.

 

There is NO online pre-course portion for this course.

Life-threatening bleeding can happen in people injured in serious accidents or disasters. Instead of being a witness, you can become an immediate responder because you know how to STOP THE BLEED®.

    The person next to a bleeding victim may very well be the one who’s most likely to save him or her from bleeding to death. By learning how to STOP THE BLEED®, you’ll gain the ability to recognize life-threatening bleeding and act quickly and effectively to control bleeding once you learn three quick techniques. Take the STOP THE BLEED® training course and become empowered to make a life or death difference when a bleeding emergency happens.

     

  • How We Teach

     

    Our instructors will teach you live—in person, using training materials specially developed to teach bleeding control techniques. They will not only instruct you, they will be available to check your movements as you practice three different bleeding control actions. They will keep working with you until you demonstrate the correct skills to STOP THE BLEED® and save a life.

 

Intended audience

 

This course is intended for individuals with or without prior medical experience that may be present during any potential traumatic incident including active shooter situations or acts of terrorism. Law enforcement officers, security, teachers, outdoor enthusiasts and other civilians are encouraged to learn these potentially life saving skills.

This is a community course and is open to all participants

 

Description: The Heartsaver AED Course teaches one-rescuer CPR, Automated External Defibrillator use, and relief of choking in adults, children, and infants. The use of barrier devices for all ages will also be covered.


Intended Audience:  This course is intended for those who have a duty to respond to a cardiac emergency because of job responsibilities or regulatory requirements or those interested in learning how to respond in the event of an emergency.

Kid Care

Description: The Kid Care Babysitting class is designed to teach adolescents the basics of caring for young children. Techniques for setting up babysitting opportunities, diaper changes, bottle-feeding, ABC's of safe sleep, playtime activities, and taking charge of situations while babysitting are covered. The course also includes pediatric first aid and CPR training.

Audience: For those interested in babysitting for young children. Average age for this course is between 12 and 15 years old. Minimum age is 10 years old.

Courses held at REMSA include lunch (not a beverage), student manual and course completion card. Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS)

Description: PHTLS courses improve the quality of trauma care and decrease mortality. The program is based on a philosophy stressing the treatment of the multi-system trauma patient as a unique entity with specific needs. PHTLS promotes critical thinking as the foundation for providing quality care. It is based on the belief that, given a good fund of knowledge and key principles, EMS practitioners are capable of making reasoned decisions regarding patient care. The course utilizes the internationally recognized PHTLS textbook and covers the following topics:

  • Scene assessment
  • Patient assessment
  • Hemorrhage control
  • Airway
  • Breathing, ventilation, and oxygenation
  • Circulation
  • Disability: TBI, SCI
  • Exposure
  • Pain Management

The course emphasizes application of trauma education through case studies, skills practice, and patient simulations.

 

Audience: PHTLS is appropriate for EMTs, paramedics, nurses, physician assistants, physicians, and other prehospital practitioners.

PHTLS Pretest

EMS Instructor course *ONLINE*

Course Description:

The EMS Instructor course is designed to provide EMS professionals with the latest techniques and skills necessary to teach students in various EMS courses. Students will be required to learn the fundamentals of EMS instruction and successfully complete assignments, quizzes, exams, and a final recorded presentation. Successful students will be endorsed to teach EMS courses in the State of Nevada up to the level of their current EMS certification. Course completion certificates will be awarded to the student once all objectives and assignments have been completed. Keep an eye out in your email on May 1st for an invitation through Google Classrooms to gain access to this course.

Course Schedule:

Participants must complete 40 hours of course content over the span of 8 weeks’ time. This class is self-paced and 100% online. 

Prerequisites:

Students must be currently certified as an EMT at a minimum.

Course Objectives:

 

  1. Provide the necessary tools and resources to expedite development as proficient learning mentors.
  2. Offer up-to-date insights into the teaching and learning dynamics, enabling EMS educators to guide their students towards achieving their educational objectives.

National Registry Psychomotor Skills - AEMT

Please arrive no later than 30 minutes prior to the published start time as testing will begin promptly. If you are not in the testing room on time you will not be permitted to test. 

Included in the price of this registration is a practice day held the day before from 9am-5pm. Please arrive to the practice day prepared to test as it will be set up as mock testing. Tips and suggestions will be provided to the students at the practice day, but the students need to have their skills sheets memorized and prepared to run through each scenario on their own.

 

National Registry Psychomotor Skills - Paramedic

Advanced EMT Entrance Exam (Hybrid Course)

This is for AEMT entrance testing to get into the Advanced EMT Hybrid Course

Selection Process - AEMT entrance testing includes EMT-B knowledge assessment and math knowledge assessment. Candidates must register for one of the testing dates to become eligible for the AEMT course. Candidates may only test one time during scheduled testing period per course. 

Please note, no electronics, cell phones, smart watches or backpacks are allowed in the testing room. 

Course Description - The Emergency Medical Technician - Advanced is qualified in advanced emergency care by a competency-based training program of didactic, clinical, and a field internship. Competencies include but are not limited to the recognition, assessment, and management of medical emergencies. The AEMT primarily provides prehospital emergency care to acutely ill or injured patients. The AEMT level has as its base the basic EMT program and has proven clinical skills and knowledge to support the skills in addition to the basic program. This level does not conflict or compete with the Paramedic level; it is another level that exists as a result of different skills being emphasized. Upcoming Advanced EMT program course dates:

Course Date: July 1st, 2024.  *Course content will be released one week prior to the due dates. Class will meet every other Friday for mandatory in person lab and exam days from 3:30pm-7:00pm.

Course Requirements:


The following requirements do not need to be met until you have been accepted into the AEMT program. All of this is for after entrance testing is completed and ONLY upon acceptance into the program. 

HepB Three shot immunization series or a titer, MMR, Tdap (Tetanus needs to be within the last ten years to be valid), Varicella (either a history of chicken pox recorded or a varicella vaccine or titer), a negative TB test within six months of the start of class. 

Drug Screen and Background Check.

Health Insurance and valid drivers license.

American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Providers Certification.

VALID Nevada State EMT License AT TIME OF REGISTRATION for course.

CPS FVSP Court Order Class (Car Seat Safety Court Ordered Course)

This is a court ordered car seat vehicle safety class. Enrolling individuals must register and pay the $50 course fee at the time of registration. 

 

 

Fire Paramedic Entrance Testing

 Thank you for considering the REMSA Paramedic Education Program 

 

There are multiple steps to successfully making it into our program.  This is a highly competitive process and each step should be taken seriously.  If you have questions at any time, please do not hesitate to contact us to ensure you are prepared for each step in the process. As of March 1st, 2023 a pharmacology exam is now a part of the application process for the paramedic program (entrance and Pharmacology exam scheduled separately). You must score at least 80% in order to be considered for the program. A score of 70-79% will allow for one retest per cohort.

Program Course dates: Didactic begins August 1st, 2024 and meets two days a week on rotating shift schedule "C"  from 0900--1700

    Step 1: Testing - The REMSA Paramedic program currently uses a written exam (this exam is taken on site at the REMSA Center for Prehospital Education in a proctored testing room) to evaluate the following categories: math (including basic math and algebra), information from the current EMT curriculum, medical terminology, EMT scope medication and dosages, and patient assessment and treatment. Candidates must complete this exam at one of the testing sessions. We do not offer study guides through REMSA, however, we do advise that you study basic math/algebra, and the current EMT curriculum. It is recommended that you review the latest EMT text of your choice. Please allot up to 90 minutes to complete the Entrance Exam. We also use a pharmacology exam (also taken on site at the REMSA Center for Prehospital Education in a proctored testing room). Please see Step 2 for more information about this exam. AEMT training and certification is no longer required. Please bring your State of Nevada EMT/AEMT certification. If you do not have a State of Nevada Certification you will be required to obtain one prior to the first day of class through reciprocity. This step should be handled directly with the State of Nevada EMS Division. Call 775-687-7590 for help with state certification issues.

      Step 2: Download Pharmacology List - You NEED to start studying NOW. You already should have downloaded this but if you have not, we cannot stress enough how important this step is. PLEASE STUDY. The Pharmacology Exam will open 6 months prior to the start of class. You must achieve an 80% to be considered for that paramedic class. If on the first attempt, you are unable to obtain an 80% but get a score between 70-79% you will be allowed one retest for the same entrance process. If you score under 70% on the Pharmacology Exam on any attempt, you will be removed from eligibility for that cohort and will be encouraged to apply for a later class. A retest can only be taken at least two weeks after the first attempt to give you more time to study. The second attempt will be from a different version of the Pharmacology Exam. The retest needs to be completed prior to the Application Deadline in order to remain eligible for the class. Please allot for up to three hours for the Pharmacology Exam. Please allow five business days for the test to be graded. 

      Step 3: Submit Completed Application - Applications are available on the website. The application has many parts including reference letters and a transcript requests.  Please be prepared to put work into this step and do not wait until the last minute to complete.

                                                                       Application Deadline: June 14th, 2024

    Step 4: Panel Interview - All successful candidates will be contacted and scheduled for a board interview. Five to seven board members including REMSA field staff will ask standard interview questions allowing the candidate to share work history and reasons why you are seeking a career as a paramedic. It is imperative that you come prepared to share why you want to be a paramedic, what experience you have that will make you successful in the class, and what drives you personally.

Successful Acceptance into the Program:  REMSA Education Coordinators will score the application, letters of recommendation, exam scores, and panel interview scores. A list of accepted candidates will be compiled and notifications will be made.  

Part of choosing to become a paramedic should also include some research and understanding of what the job entails. It is important to understand the physical and mental challenges of the job and ensuring that you are prepared to meet them prior to spending a substantial amount of time and money on the program. FOTS - First On The Scene

First on the Scene (FOTS), developed by NAEMT and the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC), provides instructors with a toolkit to teach the general public basic emergency response to life-threatening emergencies until EMS arrives on the scene. Through lesson presentations and hands-on skill stations, participants will learn how to access help in the event of a life-threatening emergency and what to do until EMS arrives. 

This course covers:
  • Activating the 911 system
  • Hands-only CPR and AED
  • Administering naloxone
  • Administering epinephrine
  • Responding to life-threatening bleeding
  • Penetrating chest trauma
  • Moving patients to safety
  • Positioning injured patients

Open to currently certified EMT, AEMT and Paramedics in the State of Nevada. An EMS Instructor will sign off each skill up to the individual’s level of certification.

S.T.A.B.L.E. Program *Online*

This is a self-paced *ONLINE* course open throughout the year where students are allowed up to 90 days to complete the program. The class is opened by REMSA 1-2 business days after registration - the course DOES NOT start 8/31. Please do not come to REMSA on this day, this is an online course.

The S.T.A.B.L.E. Program was developed to meet the educational needs of all perinatal healthcare providers – nurses, physicians, respiratory therapists, pre-hospital providers, and assistants – who must be ready to deliver critically important post-resuscitation stabilization care. 

S.T.A.B.L.E. is the most widely distributed and implemented neonatal education program to focus exclusively on the post-resuscitation/pre-transport stabilization care of sick infants. Based on a mnemonic to optimize learning, retention and recall of information, S.T.A.B.L.E. stands for the six assessment and care modules in the program: Sugar, Temperature, Airway, Blood pressure, Lab work, and Emotional support. A seventh module, Quality Improvement stresses the professional responsibility of improving and evaluating care provided to sick infants.

This course is expected to take 5.5 hours to complete.

Verbal and Physical De-escalation (REMSA Field Provider Patient Care Employees Only)

The Verbal and Physical De-escalation classes is for all REMSA Health Field Provider patient care employees only. This is for Full-time, Part-time and Per diem emplyees. It is to teach first responders the skills necessary to increase their awareness of possible dangerous situations; better prepare them to verbally de-escalate a situation; and provide them with the basic physical techniques to get them out of potentially violent situations.

This Entrance testing is for the Hybrid EMT Course

Selection Process- Basic aptitude test including math, reading, writing and basic CPR knowledge. Candidates must register for one of the testing dates to become eligible for the EMT course. Candidate may only test one time during scheduled testing period per course.

Course Description - This is the entry level course to the Emergency Medical Service profession. Topics to be covered are: EMT roles and responsibilities, airway management, patient assessment, medical emergencies, anatomy and physiology, documentation, lifting and moving, and communications. Practical labs will be conducted. Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be eligible to take the National Registry test and certify as an EMT in the State of Nevada. Upcoming EMT Program start dates are the following:

Course Date: June 10th, 2024 - EMT Course content will be released one week prior to the due dates. Class will meet every other Friday for mandatory in person lab and exam days from 3:30pm-7:00pm.  (Entrance testing will be in person)

Disclaimer - Students choosing to enter into the EMS profession will be required to participate in both the cognitive classroom education as well as the psychomotor skills education.  This class, as well as the EMS profession, will require students to be able to perform very physical tasks including lifting and moving, bending, walking, and sitting and standing for long periods.  Students are encouraged to look up the typical tasks of an EMT to gain a full understanding of the physical and mental demands of this class and the EMS profession.  All students will be subject to a background check in class prior to attending any clinical or field internship sites.  Students with adverse information in their background should contact REMSA prior to enrolling to discuss exclusion requirements.

PTEP - Psychological Trauma in EMS Patients

NAEMT's Psychological Trauma in EMS Patients (PTEP) course gives EMS practitioners the resources they need to help alleviate patients’ hidden wounds – intense fear, stress and pain – during a medical emergency.

PTEP educates EMS practitioners about the biological underpinnings of psychological trauma, the short and long-term impact on the brain and body, and warning signs that a patient is experiencing extreme psychological distress. EMS practitioners are also taught strategies and techniques to alleviate patients’ distress and help patients cope with what they’re experiencing to ward off lingering effects.

The 8-hour classroom course features scenario-based interactive sessions and lectures. Topics covered include:

  • The invisible wounds of psychological trauma

  • Reducing psychological traumatic stress

  • Understanding the physiological stress response

  • Applying the eSCAPe principle to patient care

  • Patient simulations

  • Recognizing psychological trauma within EMS

PTEP is designed for EMS practitioners and other prehospital providers. The course is accredited by CAPCE and recognized by NREMT.

 

Verbal and Physical De-escalation (Admin/Office Class Employees)

This Verbal and Physical De-escalation class is for all REMSA Health Admin/Office Employees. This is for Full-time, Part-time and Per diem emplyees.
